Key Ingredients

For these banana oatmeal chocolate chip cookies all you need is these 5 simple ingredients from your pantry — no flour, no eggs, no refined sugar! Specifically, you will need banana, rolled oats, peanut butter, flax-seed, and chocolate chips. In addition, I add cinnamon, vanilla, and a pinch of salt for extra flavor.

Ingredients for healthy banana oatmeal chocolate chip cookies - rolled oats, banana, chocolate chips, peanut butter and ground flaxseed
  • Overripe Banana – The star! Ripe bananas naturally sweeten the cookies, add moisture, and bind everything together without any added sugar or eggs. The riper, the better.
  • Rolled Oats – Hearty, chewy, and flour-free. They give the cookies their thick, wholesome texture and keep you full longer. Use gluten-free oats if needed.
  • Peanut Butter – Adds richness, healthy fats, and helps hold the cookies together. It makes them extra soft and satisfying. You can swap with almond butter if you prefer.
  • Ground Flax-seed – My little nutrition boost! It works as an egg replacer, adds fiber and omega-3s, and gives the cookies a slightly nutty flavor.
  • Chocolate Chips – Because everything is better with chocolate. They melt into gooey pockets of sweetness. I use dark chocolate chips for a healthier touch.

How to Make Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Step 1: First Make the Flax Gel. In a small bowl, mix 1 tbsp ground flax-seed with 1 tbsp water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it forms a gel. This is our binder since we only use one banana. Ground flax seed is rich in fiber and omega-3s.

Step 2: Next in a medium bowl, mash very ripe banana then add flax egg, vanilla, maple syrup if using until completely smooth — no lumps remained.

Step 3: Mix the Dough. After you mash the banana, stir in rolled oats, cinnamon, a pinch of sea salt and dark chocolate chips. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes so the oats absorb.

Step 4: Preheat your oven to 350°F / 175°C and line a baking sheet with parchment. Scoop about 1.5 tbsp of dough per cookie onto your prepared sheet and flatten slightly with your fingers. These cookies do not spread while baking. Makes 7-8 small cookies.

Step 5: Bake for 12-14 minutes until edges are firm and bottoms are lightly golden — centers will still be soft. Cool for 5 minutes on the sheet, they firm up as they cool. Enjoy warm with melty chocolate!

Storage Tips

  • Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Since these are made with fresh banana, they stay soft and moist.
  • Fridge: Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days. They get even chewier when chilled.
  • Freezer: Freeze baked cookies for up to 2 months. Place parchment paper between them so they don't stick. Thaw overnight in the fridge or at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  • To Reheat: Warm in the microwave for 10-12 seconds or in a 300°F / 150°C oven for 3-4 minutes to bring back that fresh-baked softness and melty chocolate chips.

Ingredients

  • 1 very ripe banana (100g), medium, well spotted
  • 3/4 cup (65g) rolled oats
  • 1 tbsp+1 tsp (20g) peanut or almond butter unsweetened
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed (7g) + 2 tbsp water
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp (20g) dark chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1 tsp maple syrup or honey

Instructions

  • Prep flax: In a small bowl stir ground flaxseed with hot water. Let it sit for 5 minutes to gel. The flaxseed mix acts like a binder since we are using only one banana. Ground flaxseed also adds fiber and ALA, which is a plant based omega-3 fatty acid.
  • Mash: Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C, line sheet with parchment. Mash banana completely smooth.
  • Mix: Stir in oats, flax gel, peanut butter, cinnamon, salt, vanilla, and chocolate chips. Add maple syrup if using. Let it rest for 5 minutes so oats absorb.
  • Scoop: Scoop 1.5 tbsp per cookie, flatten slightly. These do not spread at all.
  • Bake: Bake 12 to 14 minutes until edges are firm and bottoms lightly golden. Centers will be soft.
  • Cool: Cool 5 minutes on sheet before serving, they firm as they cool.

Notes

-Banana must be very ripe. Heavy spots = more sweet.
-Rest the dough 5 mins. Oats need to absorb. Otherwise cookies crumble.
-You can swap peanut butter with almond butter.
-Flatten before baking. They don't spread on their own.
-Easy swaps. Use raisins or nuts instead of chocolate chips. Or add nutmeg.

Frequently Asked questions

  • Are these banana oatmeal cookies vegan?
  • Yes. They have no egg, no dairy. Use maple syrup, not honey. And use dairy-free chocolate chips.
  • Are they gluten-free?
  • They can be. Use certified gluten-free rolled oats. Oats are naturally gluten-free but often cross-contaminated.
  • Why are my cookies crumbly?
  • You skipped the 5-minute rest. Oats need time to absorb. Also mash banana completely smooth.
  • Can I double the recipe?
  • Yes. Double all ingredients. Use 2 bananas. Baking time stays the same.
  • Can I use oat flour or porridge oats instead of rolled oats?
  • Yes, but texture changes. Rolled oats give chewy cookies. Porridge oats / quick oats make them softer. Oat flour makes them cakey. If using oat flour, use 50g only — not 65g — or dough will be too wet.
